Franz Rainer Thalmair, born 1976 in Austria, is a writer, editor, and curator who lives and works in Vienna. He studied Romance philology and linguistics in Salzburg, Paris, and Barcelona and holds a Ph.D. in text and media linguistics from the University of Salzburg. Since 2018 he has been artistic director of Kunstraum Lakeside in Klagenfurt, since 2016 co-director of the project originalcopy at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, where he also lectures in the Department of TransArts—Transdisciplinary Art. From 2010 to 2014 he was general manager and curator of the Association of Visual Artists Vienna Secession. From 2007 to 2010 he worked as head of the culture department of the online newspaper derStandard.at. Since 2007 he has published widely in journals such as Springerin—Hefte für Gegenwartskunst, Kunstforum International, and Artforum.com. He has curated exhibitions in institutions such as KARST, Plymouth; Secession, Vienna; Akbank Art Center, Istanbul; Kunsthalle Exnergasse, Vienna; Moderna Galerija, Ljubljana; Galerija Galzenica, Zagreb; Kunstverein Medienturm, Graz; Kunstraum Niederoesterreich, Vienna. He was co-founder and a member of the collective CONT3XT.NET (2006–2012).
